Review of presentation.

Following presenting my idea to my client I was given the following considerations which had not been addressed in the presentation.

Will you film in the day or at night?

Due to the dark nature of the film I will be producing I thought that it would go without saying that the film would be filmed at nighttime and as a result created quite a serious oversight in the actual pitch wherein I had not given this information to client. The film would be set at night time as was the sequence that I gained inspiration from (that being the opening sequence of the comic book "V for Vendetta" by Alan Moore.) This will hopefully help to create a feeling of tension that would not be possible if the scene took place in the day time. As well as this it is far easier to film in the daytime due to the fact that there are far less people around late at night or early in the morning than there would be at mid day making the filming more time convenient.

what are your alternatives to using music that is copyrighted?

Personally I much prefer the idea of using copyrighted music in my piece however if this proves to be impossable due to me getting no response from the large companies that own the music or them choosing to monetise its use. This means that I will have to resort to using either stock music or some ind of atmospheric music. This would be far more difficult than using copyrighted music as that I would have to find something that suits the atmosphere of the film I am making which would likely take a long time. This may also mean that I would have to change the pacing of the trailer to accommodate whatever music I find and subsequently choose to use.

TREATMENT

The White Room [Working title]

Executive summary:

For this project I will create the trailer for a short Sci/fi / thriller film which will show a protagonist walking through the streets at night after a night drinking with his friends when he becomes aware of someone following him. The protagonist becomes aware of this person following them and decides to try and get away from the by walking more quickly which eventually escalates to them running. This doesn’t work however as that we soon see them tackled and knocked out by the person who was following them. The last shot of the trailer would be a close up of a phone placed beside them while someone at the other end states “We have been watching you for a very long time”

I would likely film most of the scenes in this film in small alleys in Sheffield city centre as well as a small concrete room which will most likely be the one located under UTC in town.

I want the target audience for my trailer to be 16 to 35 year old people of all genders. This is because the trailer will likely feature bloody violence and foul language which would earn it a BBFC 16 rating.

Statement of Need:

The purpose of a trailer is to both convey the build an ambiguous idea of the narrative to the audience but also to establish its tone so that the audience understands what type of film it will be. This means that when creating a trailer it is important to include shots that fit with the tone of film that is to be created.

If the audience understands the type of film that is coming out as well as being pleased visually by some of the shots featured then they will be far more likely to pay to see the full feature than if there was no trailer available.

In short a trailer makes it far more likely for a target audience to pay to see the full product.

Product Description:

The trailer I will create for this project will open with a series of cross cutting shots showing two men seemingly both getting ready to go out at night however as the scene progresses one becomes more sinister as they put on mostly black clothing and wrap a scarf around their face put black gloves on.

This will then transition to a shot of the protagonist walking down an alley when he turns and sees the other man behind him. This quickly escalates to the point where the protagonist is running from the other man (as the situation escalates so odes the editing with more frantic cross cutting between the two men.) eventually The second man catches the first which prompts the screen to go black and the only sound that can be heard is fast breathing.

After this the protagonist will be seen alone in a room which is completely empty with a phone next to him and a muffled voice at the other end states “We have been watching you for a very long time”.

In terms of equipment there will not be very much required other than a camera, tripod and slider for capturing the film itself aside from lighting equipment all of which will be available to me through collage. The locations I will film in will all be as listed below:

·         3x Sheffield city centre alleys

·         2x Bedrooms with mirrors for shots of characters getting ready

·         1x empty room for ending seen

·         1x pub/ bar for a shot to establish where the lead character has spent their night before the main chase scene.

The main milestones of the project will be firstly finding locations to film legally, finding actors to star in the film, getting the footage and finally the end of the editing process of the trailer.  The exact deadlines for these are difficult to predict I would personally say that it would be fair to have 2 months (from such a time that the project is given a go ahead from the client) to find actors and locations, another month to gain the footage and 3/4 months in postproduction to make sure that everything is done to the best possible quality.

Legal and ethical considerations:

There are several issues that I must ensure that I have taken into consideration before making a product such as this one. Firstly Copyright must be gained for the music I plan to use in the trailer so that it is not stolen from the company which initially produced it. As well as this I must make sure to product the identities of people who are in the project by coincidence (members of the public etc) meaning that I cannot include their names or any other identifying features they possess. Lastly it is important.

I also want to make sure that my film is diverse in terms of gender and ethnicity which means that I will make sure to include people from several ethnicities and all genders. I have already stated that I want to make this film rated 16 which means that I don’t need to worry about including violence however I should be careful in terms of encouraging alcoholism as it is one of the main themes of the trailer.

Budget:

I will have to keep expenditure to a minimum when creating this project due to the fact that I have practically no money dedicated to it. This will mean that I will have to ask people I know to be in it and to help with production rather than paying them. I will also have to film in locations that will be free for me to use.

I will also have to make sure that everyone who is working on the project has enough money to afford their own food and travel between filming locations.

Crew:

The main roles that must be fulfilled here are camera operator and several people in charge of lighting. As that I am creating this film independently I am limited to only a few people who understand how to operate any of the equipment necessary. This means that I will likely only have the help of around two other people when creating this project. As that I already know people who are able to do this I will not need to look for people however if I did I would likely use a service such as a social network to find people who will be available and are experienced in creating such a product.

I will personally handle:

·         Script writing

·         storyboarding

·         Directing

·         Filming

·         Editing

·         Lighting

However I will likely need assistance with lighting more than anything else as that this equipment requires operation while filming is in progress.

Mind map of inital ideas and synopsis including analysis

dd

Music video Synopsis one:
This music video would be rather difficult to film as that it would require a lot of shots taken at night. This means that i would have to set up a large amount of lighting equipment in a high up spot where there isn't likely to be any power sources. As well as this it would require the use of a lot of different locations within the city meaning that i would have to spend a large amount of time scouting locations at night to find the best places to film. As well as this filming at night time in a large city comes with many safety concerns of its own ranging from members of the crew or actors falling due to lack of visibility to pieces of equipment being stolen or damaged while production is taking place.
However i feel like this music video structure would be quite generic which in itself provides comfortable reassurance for the audience and me creating it as that it would not stray too far out of the ordinary and would therefore not require a large amount of creative risk.

Music video Synopsis two:

I feel like this music video idea contains many of the same limitations as the one i have just analysed for example the usage of may locations requiring a large amount of planning. As well as this it would be difficult to film shots on the interior of a moving car due to the health and safty limitations of doing so.
This idea however i feel is much more likely to come to fruituon than any other I have devised as that there are many more indie bands in this city than any other genre meaning that finding one interested in having a music video produced would be far easier than finding someone in a different genre (for example country.)

Trailer synopsis one:
I feel that the idea behind this trailer would lend itself to the indipendent nature of creating this trailer due to the fact that all i would need is roughly three or four actors and two sets (a white room and a street.)
This means that I wouldnt have to do huge amounts of location scouting for this project.
However it may be difficult to find a completly white room to film in especqally one which appears like the prison setting oulined in the synopsis.

Trailer synopsis two:
I feel like this is my best idea for a trailer as that all i would need is the appearance of several people around at the time that the documentary aims to portray.
